Ativan generic title Lorazepam.This medicine is prescribed to combat anxiety. Lorazepam is part of a group of medications known as benzodiazepines that affect the nerves and brain (central nervous system) in order to offer a relaxing effect. This drug enhances its effects by enhancing the effect of a particular naturally occurring chemical within the body (GABA).

How to use Ativan

Inject this medication with or without food, as recommended by your physician. The dosage is determined by the medical conditions you have, age and your response to treatment.

If your doctor has directed it make sure you take the medication regularly in order to gain the maximum benefit. In order to benefit from remembering the medication, take this medication at the exact time(s) every day.

Do not abruptly stop with this medication without consulting your physician. Certain conditions could become worse after the drug is abruptly discontinued. The dose you take may have to be reduced gradually.

While it is beneficial to many, it could also lead to dependence. The risk is higher when you suffer from an addiction disorder (such as an overuse of alcohol or drugs). Use this medication as recommended to reduce the chance of developing addiction. 

Side Effects

Dizziness, drowsiness, loss of coordination, headaches, blurred vision, nausea, changing sexual interest or ability and constipation, heartburn or a change in appetite could be the result. When any of the symptoms persist or worsen, inform your physician or pharmacist immediately.

Be aware that this medication was prescribed by your doctor because he has determined that the benefit for you is more than the potential risk of adverse consequences. A majority of users with this medication don’t suffer from serious adverse side effects.

Contact your physician immediately If you are experiencing any serious adverse reactions, for example: mood or mental changes (such as hallucinations and depression, as well as thoughts of suicide) difficulty speaking, changes in your vision or unusual weakness, difficulty walking, memory issues and symptoms of an infections (such as a sore throat which persists or fever).

Take medical benefit immediately if you suffer from any severe adverse effects, such as eye or skin yellowing seizures, and slow or shallow breathing.

It is rare for this medication to produce the opposite effect of its normal calming effects. The symptoms of this effect could include agitation, anger, violent behavior and restlessness, confusion and excitement. You may also be speaking more frequently than normal. Inform your doctor immediately when you experience any of these signs.

An extremely serious adverse reaction from this medication is not common. However, seek medical benefit immediately if you detect any indications of a severe allergic reaction that include: swelling or itching (especially of the mouth, tongue or face) extreme dizziness, difficulty breathing.

Warnings

Lorazepam is at risk of dependence and abuse, which could lead to an overdose or death. When you take this medication in conjunction alongside alcohol or other substances that cause drowsiness or breathing difficulties (especially opioid drugs like hydrocodone and codeine) can cause severe adverse effects, such as death. To reduce the risk of developing a serious illness, your physician must prescribe the lowest dose of lorazepam which works and be taken for the shortest amount of duration. Stopping this medication suddenly could result in severe (possibly potentially fatal) withdrawal, particularly in the case of using this medication over a prolonged period of time or in large doses. To help prevent withdrawal, your doctor might reduce your dosage slowly. The withdrawal symptoms can last from several weeks or even months.

Precautions

Before taking lorazepam, tell your physician or pharmacist if you’re sensitive to it or to any other benzodiazepines (such as clonazepam, alprazolam diazepam) or if you suffer from other allergies. This product could contain inactive ingredients that could cause reactions to allergies or other issues. Ask your pharmacist for further information.

When together these medications, be sure to inform your physician or pharmacist about your medical history, including liver disease, kidney disease, glaucoma or lung issues (such like sleep apnea) or mental/mood conditions (such as psychosis, depression) and your personal or family experience with a substance abuse disorder (such as excessive use of or dependence on alcohol/drugs).

The drug can make you feel dizzy, sleepy, or distort your sight. Cannabis or alcohol (cannabis) can cause you to be more drowsy or dizzy. Don’t drive, operate machinery, or perform any activity that requires you to be alert or have sharp vision until you are able to perform it in a safe manner. Do not drink alcohol. Discuss with your physician when you’re together cannabis (cannabis).

Before you undergo surgery, inform your dentist or doctor about the various products you’re using (including prescription medications, nonprescription medications, and natural products).

Seniors might be more sensitive to the adverse effects of this medication particularly the loss of coordination and sleepiness. Drowsiness and loss of coordination can boost the likelihood of falling. In addition, lorazepam could cause the opposite of its normal calming effects in older adults (see the section on Side Effects).

This medication could cause opposite effects to its normal relaxing effect on children, leading to shakes, restlessness or changes in mood (such as hallucinations, agitation).

Consult your physician if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant. It is not recommended to become pregnant when with Lorazepam. Lorazepam could harm an unborn baby. Mothers who take this medication later during pregnancy could experience symptoms like slow or shallow breathing and crying that is non-stop shakes, and difficulty feeding. If you find yourself pregnant, speak to your doctor immediately about the potential risks and benefits from this drug.

This medication is absorbed by breast milk. Make sure to consult your doctor prior to starting breastfeeding.

Interactions

Drug interactions can alter the way your medication works or raise your chance of developing dangerous adverse side negative effects.This document isn’t comprehensive enough to provide all interactions that may happen between medications. A few products that can interact with this medication include Clozapine, Kava sodium oxybate (also called gamma hydroxybutyrate (or GHB).

Inform your physician or pharmacist if you’re using other medications, such as cough or pain relievers made of opioids (such as hydrocodone, codeine) alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) or other medicines for anxiety or sleep (such as diazepam, alprazolam and zolpidem) and muscles relaxants (such as cyclobenzaprine, carisoprodol) and antihistamines (such as diphenhydramine, cetirizine).

Make sure you read the labels on your medications (such as cough-and-cold or allergy products) since they may contain ingredients that can cause sleepiness. Consult your doctor for advice on these products in a safe manner.

Overdose

If someone has taken a lethal dose and suffers from serious symptoms, such as vomiting or shortness of breath, Call 911. If they are not able to, call the poison control center immediately. US residents can contact the poison control number of their area at 1-800-222-1222. The signs of an overdose could include confusion, sluggish reactions, clumsiness or sluggishness, deep sleep and a losing consciousness.
